Frankenweenie Remake Is Moving Along

The full length adaption of Tim Burton's Frankenweenie has been in the works for a very long time. Back when Burton did the original short in 1984, he had wanted it to be a full length stop-motion film like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. While the release date of October 5th 2012 is still a long wait, the film has gotten a logo (above) and official synopsis:

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience.
Of course stop motion takes an incredibly long time, and with over 200 puppets in the film a lot of effort has to be put in to create just one scene.

Look for more Frankenweenie updates here as they're released. Until then, if you haven't seen the original short, you can watch it below:

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie Remake Gets a Release Date

The long talked of, Tim Burton produced, Frankenweenie remake now has a release date of March 9, 2012 announced today by Disney. The movie is a stop-motion, 3-D revamp of Tim Burton's 1984 short film. This project has been in the works for a very long time, and even though March 2012 seems like a long ways away, it's nice to see things are moving along.

Frankenweenie Could Start Production Soon

Disney producer Don Hahn said to Ain't It Cool News,
"The puppets are ready, the script is done, and now that Tim Burton is clear of Alice in Wonderland he's at the helm of Frankenweenie in 3D"
After the rumors about an Addams Family film were proven to be false, his Frankenweenie remake is now looking promising. As far as how his Dark Shadows adaption fits in or if a Sleeping Beauty film will ever be made is still unclear.

Burton Says Addams Family Rumors Aren't True

MTV Movies Blog asked Tim Burton's associates if the rumors about his Addams Family project were true to which they responded, after speaking to Tim directly, "There is no truth to the story. Tim has not lined up any of his upcoming projects."
No upcoming projects lined up? We're not sure if that includes his involvement with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter or his Sleeping Beauty film. Tim also has his Dark Shadows adaption and the Frankenweenie remake that's been in talks for forever. So at the moment it's unclear what Burton's next film will actually be, if I had to guess I think it'll probably be Dark Shadows and I think he'll probably produce Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter with Timur Bekmembetov, but we'll post updates as soon as they're available.

Frankenweenie Character Breakdown and Details Surface

For quite some time now there has been bits of talk of Tim Burton remaking his short film, Frankenweenie. Now Character descriptions and some details about the project have shown up, keeping our hope for the movie alive. The following character voices for the stop-motion movie are all aged 8-11, so no clues on, if any, adult roles yet (and if Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter will offer up their voices for the movie).

[EDGAR] A Caucasian Male 8-11 years old. Edgar is a needy little kid who wants desperately to be accepted by the cool kids in his class. Naturally a little nerdy, he gravitates to Victor and basically annoys him until he agrees to let him be his lab partner. He is more than a little gullible and is easily tricked into giving away Victor’s precious secret and unwittingly starting the whole mess with the other monsters.

[TOSHIAKI] A Japanese Male 8-11 years old. Toshiaki is the natural leader of the cool kids in Victor’s class. He is a good athlete, and an avid little league baseball player but Toshiaki has a mischievous side. He is the one that ultimately manipulates E into giving up the secret of Sparky and it is his idea to turn the other animals into monsters. He is Japanese and his monster creation is a little Godzilla lizard.

[BOB] A Caucasian Male 8-11 years old. Bob is the dumb, jockey kid. He has more brawn than brains. He follows Toshiaki and Nassor around even when it means that he has to be the one to test the home made jet pack that Toshiaki has created.

[NASSOR] A Middle-Eastern Male 8-11 years old. Nassor is the star of the little league team and just goes along with Toshiak’s plan. He is a bit more serious than the others but still doesn’t see the impending chaos when he chooses to bring his hamster mummy back to life.

[WEIRD GIRL] A Caucasian Female 8-11 years old. She has a very dark and ominous take on even the most mundane occurrences and jumps at the chance to bring some dead animals back to life.

[ELSA] A Caucasian Female 8-11 years old. Elsa is a sweet girl who likes to follow the rules and not cause too much trouble. A bit of a “goody two shoes,” she is not afraid to speak up and even corrects the teacher when he makes a mistake. She is excited about the festivities planned for the town’s Dutch Day parade and even has a solo dance number in the show.

Look for more information here as it comes out!

What ever happened to Tim Burton's Frankenweenie Remake?

It's been awhile since we've heard news about Tim Burton's remake of his short film, Frankenweenie, but Producer Allison Abbate (who is working on the new movie Fantastic Mr. Fox) assures us it's still in the works, but far off. Two years is the estimate, but when it does start filming it should be done around London, and it seems at this time that it'll be done in Black and White like the original (hooray!) and possibly in 3-D.

9 Movie Exclusives and Tim Burton Interviews

Starlog.com has a two part 9 exclusive, part one was posted today and can be found here. There were some picture's included that I haven't seen yet (maybe you have, I don't know...):
FP-9-017R
FP-9-050R
BTS-1853C
Part two of this story comes out tomorrow.

A Tim Burton quote has been going around about his relationship with Johnny Depp:

"It's very nice to have someone that you can have a completely abstract conversation with and leave the room, feel like everything's fine, and then realize that if you pick it apart, you have absolutely no idea what either of you said." —Tim Burton [MTV]

And check out this Q&A with Tim over at http://southflorida.metromix.com,

What's your favorite animated film?
[Long pause] I'd have to pick something that had a lot of impact, which was "Jason and the Argonauts" [by] Ray Harryhausen. That really had an impact on me. The stop-motion animation and the kind of reality and scale of it at the time when I saw it was really amazing.

Would you ever want to remake that film? They're remaking "Clash of the Titans."
[Chuckles] I know. Nah, I think it was good.

How are things coming along with "Dark Shadows"?

I haven't really started that at all. I still have to finish "Alice." So that's a big job ahead of me. It's way too early. [Laughs] Probably in a year's time.

Any ideas that you've already been thinking up for it?

Well, just to try to capture the tone. It was a strange show, it has a strange vibe to it. And that's, I think, key to it.

"Alice" has been all over the place, with photos and trailers and you guys at Comic-Con.

Usually I don't talk about something before it's done. So it's been an odd situation because I [still] have so much work to do. I'm not scared of [all the special effects], per se, but I'm a bit daunted by the time and the unknown quality of it. But that makes it exciting as well.

What about "Frankenweenie"?

Still early. Like I said, the focus I have is "Alice." It's hard to think of anything else that requires a large amount of work.

But that's on the table.
Oh yeah, afterward, yeah. Exactly. Slowly get started.

I saw the latest "Harry Potter" last night, which stars your partner, Helena Bonham Carter. She makes a pretty mean baddie.
[Jokes] Yeah, she's a good witch. She had a lot of practice. She's good at that.

Does she ever come to you for tips on how to channel all that darkness?
No, she keeps it all personal. She keeps it all for her own uses, yeah. Witchcraft uses. [Laughs]

New York's Museum of Modern Art is doing an exhibit on you later this year. That was a little unexpected.

I feel like it's a weird dream—I'm not sure that it's real. But it's very exciting. That's probably more scary than a film, in a certain way. It feels a bit more exposing. I'm trying not to think too much about it. I'm trying to remove myself a bit from it—a bit of an out-of-body experience.

Your films have such a consistent, dark vision. Do you ever wake up wanting to do something crazy like a romantic comedy?
[Chuckles] No. Well, I thought "Sweeney Todd" was a romantic comedy in my mind. So, I think I've already done it. [Laughs] But not the way you're thinking, because that would be scary. But some of those are so scary, they're like horror movies anyway. They don't need my help.

And from http://www.411mania.com, more Alice and Frankenwenie news:

Burton Bringing Alice and Frankenweenie to the 3D Screen

Tim Burton is pairing up with Disney to direct two 3-D films, Alice in Wonderland and Frankenweenie.

Variety says the two-movie deal with Walt Disney Studios begins with Alice in Wonderland, which will combine performance-capture imagery, currently seen in Beowulf, with live-action footage.

The script by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) is based on the Lewis Carroll classic.

Burton, who is wrapping Sweeney Todd at Paramount and DreamWorks, will tackle Alice in Wonderland early next year, with production set to wrap by May.

After "Alice," Burton will helm and produce Frankenweenie, based on his 1984 short film about a pet dog brought back to life by his loyal owner. The movie will be shot in stop-motion animation and shown in digital 3-D.

While Tim Burton is definitely a twisted, strange, disturbed individual, you can't deny he's got directorial skills. That said, any remake of Alice in Wonderland will draw comparison to the original, which could hurt its critical success. Now Frankenweenie, on the other hand, does not have the background of Alice nor the general story appeal on hearing the brief description. It kind of sounds like his last stop-motion film, Corpse Bride. That said, Burton has a certain magic that can turn things into gold, so here's hoping he works his magic again.

Lots of News

First of all, an interview with Tim Burton, read the story about it and download the MP3 at http://goldderby.latimes.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From CHUD.com:
Sweeney Boring. Is anyone else like me totally indifferent to Sweeney Todd, a film which should have been one of the most anticipated of the year? Seeing the trailer is like watching Tim Burton do the same damn thing again for the 11,000th time it seems. Hey look, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Nepotism are pale and in a gothic setting! It's rare! I'll admit, I'm very not a die-hard Tim Burton fan but the guy needs to change gears STAT.
grrrrr... puchu!
Tim Burton is indeed to remake Frankenweenie for Disney, along with his addaption of Alice in Wonderland; also a stop motion/sortof like the new movie, Beowulf. Read more about it at http://www.empireonline.com.
Burton To Remake Frankenweenie?
"I guess we can't punish Victor for bringing Sparky back from the dead..." ~Frankenweenie
Rumor has it that our favorite director, Tim Burton will remake his 1984, black and white short frankenweenie into a yet another of his wonderful stop-motion creations. Www.slashfilm.com sums it all up well in their article here.
I think that, even though his stop-motion films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride are amazing and I love them dearly (enough to memorize them!), I enjoyed Frankenweenie in it's original wonderfull-ness. Remaking it would be just another opertunity for Disney to make more money (atleast in my opinion). As said in the article, Frankenweenie was one Burton's first films along with Vincent (another grand stop-motion, dedicated to his, and all of ours, hero the late Vincent Price) and was shunned (might not be the best word but oh well) by Disney, and it was only until they saw how successful his other films were that they hired him back to do Nightmare. Well anyways, I'd love for everyone to read the article and to hear your opinions, do you think he will (or should) remake Frankenweenie???
Love to all, HBCfan
